The quick launch bar was a great feature created in Windows XP and only lived through into Windows Vista. Albeit, it is still accessible with limited success with Windows 7 and well into Windows 10. However, with the start of pinning shortcuts directly to the taskbar in Windows 7 the Quick Launch Bar is best left as a thing in the past.
Remember the desktop is not meant to be used a place to store files it is mean to be a place to easily access shortcuts to your files. The reason is, everything on the desktop gets stored to your computer’s active memory as such it slows down the computer. To keep the computer from slowing down too much we use shortcuts instead. Even though this video pertains to Windows XP the Desktop has been in use from Windows 3.1 to Windows 10 has been modified ever so slightly since windows 95.
